Can you guess what's being sold here?

Chaipak Dog Training Center
One of the most memorable and funniest commercials has to be the chaipak dog training center advertisement. This advertisement uses emotional appeal, mystery, and humor. In this commercial a cute dog is laying on the couch with man and a woman watching TV. Then suddenly the dog gets up and hangs half of its body outside the door and farts! As the dog casually comes back on the couch, the man lets out some gas and the woman is disgusted by the man. An example for the emotional appeal would be the use of the cute dog, which always appeals to the viewer. However, the viewer’s attention is kept throughout the commercial by the mystery of the product that is being sold. In the advertisement it is never indicated what is being sold. Only at the end the words for the dog training center appear. The use of humor is also an important key fact in this advertisement. The humor of the dog and the man farting keeps the viewer’s attention and makes the advertisement unique and memorable. In conclusion, this advertisement is short but has enough humor, emotional appeal, and mystery to keep the viewer’s attention and always stay in your mind.

Advertising Over Time

Advertising is a form of communication which is used to convince an audience, viewers, readers or listeners, to either make a purchase or take some action upon ideas, or services. Advertisements are used by many different kinds of groups such as political campaigns, corporations and even activists. Today one can stumble upon advertisements almost anywhere, during your favorite television shows, between songs on the radio and now even the internet. In addition, these advertisements have become longer but more entertaining. Over the past century advertising techniques has changed tremendously by appealing to certain demographics, portraying different values and most importantly containing many different aesthetics.
One good advertisement to take a look at would be the Cossack Vodka ad from the 1970's, it is a picture of a young woman with cartoon features and the caption reading, “The Morning after….!”, and the young woman saying, “Oh, wasn't it fantastic!?!! And this morning I feel so beautiful, so beautiful!"(http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1061671/advertising_how_it_has_changed_over.html?cat=52). This advertisement’s demographic is for young woman over the age of twenty-one who enjoy drinking more than average, but dislike hangovers during the next morning. This advertisement promotes drinking and partying all night without consequences. Its values are unethical because drinking can damage your health. The purpose of this advertisement is to make the drinker feel beautiful, especially women, while they are drinking it and the next day when they will more than likely be sick. It also appeals to these women’s emotions by “suggesting that drinking Cossack vodka all night will not give anyone a hangover and they can still look good after a long night of partying” (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1061671/advertising_how_it_has_changed_over.html?cat=52).

A more recent advertisement is the Absolute Vodka ad from 2000. It is a picture of an indentation in the ground the shape of an Absolute Vodka bottle and a bright white caption underneath that states "Absolut Bullsh*t" (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1061671/advertising_how_it_has_changed_over.html?cat=52). This advertisement targets younger drinkers, those just old enough to drink and has an attention appeal. The purpose is to look at with admiration when drinking Absolut and to be a fool if one is to improperly get rid of the vodka bottle without consuming what is in it (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1061671/advertising_how_it_has_changed_over.html?cat=52). This advertisement also uses simple but subtle colors to attract your attention. It also uses emotional appeal. Finally, this modern ad uses a curse word that would have never been in any earlier advertisement.

Finally, one can see that advertisements have changed much throughout the years by the appealing to different demographics, containing different values and finally including different aesthetics. For example, the demographic has changed to a bigger part of the population than just women. In addition, the values have changed from not feeling ashamed to a feeling of admiration. Finally, over time curse words have become normal on advertisements.
